Two young individuals, aged 12 and 13, have been taken into custody in connection with the recent attack on former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa. The New York City Police Department reported that the two boys were charged with gang assault, although their identities have not been disclosed.
Initially, the police were on the lookout for five suspects believed to be involved in the assault, indicating that there may be more individuals connected to the incident still at large. The attack occurred on Second Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where Paterson, 70, and his 20-year-old stepson were subjected to a violent altercation.
According to Paterson’s account, the incident began when he and his stepson noticed three individuals climbing a fire escape while they were out walking their dog. After a confrontation ensued, they returned home only to be confronted by a larger group of individuals later on, leading to physical violence. Paterson mentioned that he was struck in the face and shoulder, while his stepson was knocked to the ground during the altercation.
Both Paterson and Anthony Sliwa were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment following the attack. Paterson’s stepson required five stitches on his lower lip and sustained several bruises, but they have since been discharged and are on the path to recovery.
In response to the arrests, a spokesperson for Governor Paterson expressed relief that the suspects had turned themselves in and hoped that they would learn from the incident. The former Governor also commended the parents of the young offenders for holding them accountable for their actions and extended gratitude to the NYPD for their swift response.
Additionally, Curtis Sliwa, father of Anthony Sliwa and founder of the Guardian Angels, praised his son’s courage and resilience during the assault. He emphasized that his son stood his ground and protected David Paterson, displaying bravery in the face of adversity.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to apprehend any additional suspects involved in the attack. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the consequences of engaging in violent behavior, especially among young individuals.
