A man was accused of pretending to be a utility worker to enter a Michigan home and killed the homeowner, Hussein Murray, 72, while tying up his wife. Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was charged with felony murder and other crimes related to the attack. The suspects likely followed Hussein Murray home from his jewelry store before the incident occurred.

Hernandez was arrested in Shreveport, Louisiana, after being identified from the couple’s doorbell camera footage showing two men in fake DTE Energy uniforms. The second suspect was arrested in Plymouth Township, located 40 miles from the Murrays’ home. Prosecutors stated that the suspects visited the Murrays’ home twice, claiming to check for a gas leak before the fatal attack took place.

Hussein Murray’s death was ruled a homicide, but the exact cause was not disclosed due to the severity of his injuries. His wife, Linda Murchid Murray, managed to call 911 after the attack, stating that the suspects tied her up and demanded money and jewelry. Hernandez is currently in custody in Louisiana awaiting extradition to Michigan.

Hussein Murray’s grandson described him as a kind and compassionate man who had a positive impact on his family and community. The younger Murray praised his grandfather’s character and expressed pride in being his grandson. He also commended his grandmother for her strength during this difficult time.

After the incident, DTE issued a statement advising residents to verify the identification of anyone claiming to be an employee before allowing them into their homes. Hussein Murray, originally from Lebanon, owned a jewelry store in Detroit and was remembered as a pillar of strength by his community.

In addition to his business endeavors, Murray was known for his cooking and gardening skills. His grandson fondly recalled how Murray would share the fruits and vegetables from his garden with others, demonstrating his pride in his produce. Murray’s burial was scheduled for Monday, with a commemoration service planned for October 20 at the Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn.
