Former Arsenal footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, spilled the beans about his attempt to sneak £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK by stuffing it in suitcases. This shady business came to light when 60kg of cannabis was discovered after two women landed at Stansted Airport in Essex on September 2. The cannabis had made its way from Bangkok, Thailand, concealed in the suitcases of Emmanuel-Thomas’s girlfriend and a pal. Emmanuel-Thomas confessed in court that he felt ‘sorry’ for dragging Yasmin Piotrowska, 33, into the whole drug-smuggling mess.

Plot Twist: The women, Piotrowska and her buddy Rosie Rowland, both in their late twenties, thought they were signing up for an all-expenses-paid vacay to Thailand. Little did they know, they were being used as mules to transport weed back into the UK. When the women’s suitcases were inspected, a whopping 60kg of cannabis was found stashed away – 15kg in each bag. To everyone’s surprise, the charges against Piotrowska and Rowland were dropped after they claimed they were under the impression they were smuggling gold, not drugs. Looks like someone didn’t read the fine print on that all-inclusive trip offer!

Guilty as Charged: Emmanuel-Thomas, who once triumphed in the FA Youth Cup with Arsenal in 2009, finally owned up to his crime at Chelmsford Crown Court in Essex. The charges of fraudulent evasion of importing cannabis between July 1, 2024, and September 2, 2024, were laid on him. Despite initially denying the accusations last year, he was eventually sacked by Greenock Morton, a Scottish club, once the charges came to light. As the father of two awaits his sentencing date, the court decided to let Rowland and Piotrowska off the hook, believing they had no clue they were part of a drug-smuggling operation. Maybe next time, they’ll think twice before accepting a free trip to an exotic location with suspiciously heavy suitcases.
