A Gloucester Township couple in New Jersey got themselves in some serious trouble when they were arrested for allegedly abusing and confining a child in their home for years. Branndon Mosley, 41, and Brenda Spencer, 38, faced charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and other offenses. Mosley even got hit with charges of aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault. The victim, now 18 years old, managed to escape on May 8 with the help of a neighbor, leading to the arrest of the couple on May 11.
The victim revealed that the abuse began around 2018 when Spencer pulled them out of school during seventh grade and kept them locked up at home. They were reportedly made to live in a dog crate for a year before being moved to a padlocked bathroom. The victim mentioned being allowed out only when family visited. To make matters worse, they were forced to use a bucket instead of a proper toilet in a room equipped with an alarm system to prevent escape. Along with being physically abused and sexually assaulted by Mosley, the victim also had to endure living in poor conditions alongside animals.
Spencer, who was the victim’s mother, and Mosley, their stepfather, were both unemployed. Mosley worked for SEPTA but was placed on leave pending investigation. The couple is currently being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility awaiting a detention hearing in Superior Court. It’s a truly disturbing case that sheds light on the need to revisit laws concerning homeschooling and child welfare.
Maybe it’s just me, but cases like this really make you question the system. It’s hard to believe that parents can just pull their kids out of school without any real oversight. Not really sure why this matters, but the New Jersey Department of Education should probably do more to ensure homeschooled children are actually receiving an education. In this situation, it’s clear that something went seriously wrong, and it’s a wake-up call for everyone involved.
The fact that the victim had to endure such horrific abuse for years is truly heartbreaking. It’s a reminder that we need to do better as a society to protect our children. The details of this case are shocking, and it’s a stark reminder of the dangers that some children face behind closed doors. As the legal process unfolds, one can only hope that justice will be served for the victim and that steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
