Nearly 30 years after 15-year-old Danielle “Danni” Houchins was found dead near a fishing access site in Montana, authorities have identified her killer through DNA testing. The suspect, 55-year-old Paul Hutchinson, died by suicide just hours after being interviewed by investigators about the cold case.
Houchins went missing on September 21, 1996, when she left her home in Belgrade, Montana. Her body was later discovered in shallow water at the Gallatin River fishing access site. In 2021, Sheriff Dan Springer brought in outside experts from California to assist in solving the case. Private investigator Tom Elfmont and Sergeant Court Depweg used DNA technology to create a partial DNA profile from hairs found on Houchins’ body. After interviewing Hutchinson, who displayed nervous behavior, investigators found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Houchins’ sister, Stephanie Mollet, described Hutchinson’s actions as a violent assault that led to her sister’s death. Despite Hutchinson’s suicide, Mollet believes he was guilty and chose to evade accountability.
