Look, I’m Gonna Say It: We’re in Trouble
I’ve been in this business for 22 years. That’s 22 years of deadlines, of chasing stories, of watching the industry I love crumble around me. I started at a small paper in Des Moines, moved to a mid-sized outfit in Austin, and now I’m here, at the precipice of what feels like the end of an era.
And it’s not just me. Last Tuesday, I had coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Marcus, who’s been a reporter in Chicago for 18 years. He looked at me and said, “Mike, we’re all gonna be driving for Uber soon.” I laughed. Then I stopped. Because honestly? He’s probably right.
But Here’s the Thing…
We’re not going down without a fight. I mean, look at what we’ve done here at CrimeNewsX. We’ve embraced digital, we’ve innovated, we’ve tried to stay ahead of the curve. But it’s hard. It’s really, really hard.
I remember when I first started, we had these huge, clunky computers that took forever to boot up. Now? Now we’ve got algorithms and AI and God knows what else. And it’s all moving so fast that it’s hard to keep up. Just the other day, I was talking to a colleague named Dave about programming languages trends 2026. I mean, 2026! We’re still trying to figure out 2024!
Let Me Tell You About the Time…
About three months ago, we had this big conference here in the city. All the bigwigs were there, talking about the future of news. And I’m sitting there, listening to them drone on about “synergies” and “disruptive innovation,” and I’m thinking, “Just tell me how we’re gonna pay the bills next month.” (Which honestly nobody asked for but here we are.)
And then there was this one guy, some tech guru from Silicon Valley. He gets up there and says, “The future is in personalized content.” And I’m like, “Oh great, so now we’ve gotta be psychologists too?” I mean, really. It’s like they’re speaking a different language.
But We’re Fighters, Dammit
So yeah, we’re screwed. But we’re not giving up. We’re gonna keep pushing, keep innovating, keep trying to figure out this crazy digital world. Because at the end of the day, that’s what we do. We’re journalists. We’re stubborn. We’re not gonna go down without a fight.
And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, we’ll figure it out. Maybe we’ll find a way to make this work. Maybe we’ll save the industry we love.
Or maybe we’ll all be driving for Uber soon. Who knows.
