A tragic incident unfolded in New Jersey, where a 17-year-old boy was arrested for the suspected murder of a father in front of his children during a carjacking attempt. The victim, Yoni Emmanuel Cruz-Rodriguez, was fatally shot by the teenager as he tried to steal Cruz-Rodriguez’s white Dodge Durango on the night of July 12.
The heartbreaking turn of events occurred when Cruz-Rodriguez was standing behind his vehicle and the suspect entered the car to drive away. In a desperate attempt to stop the carjacking, Cruz-Rodriguez tried to climb into the back of his vehicle, only to be shot multiple times by the teen. The Durango crashed into parked cars shortly after the suspect fled the scene on foot.
When emergency responders arrived at 10:20 p.m., they found the overturned car with Cruz-Rodriguez and his two children inside. Tragically, Cruz-Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, his children escaped unharmed from the ordeal.
The victim, a native of Honduras, is survived by his 3-year-old son and two-month-old daughter. His family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to repatriate his body to Honduras for burial. The discrepancy in the victim’s name, noted as Yony in official reports but spelled as Yoni on social media and the fundraiser, adds to the heartache of the situation.
The teenage suspect, whose identity is protected due to his age, was apprehended by law enforcement, including U.S. Marshals, on Monday without resistance. He faces serious charges including first-degree felony murder, first-degree carjacking, second-degree aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and weapons offenses. The suspect is currently detained in a juvenile facility awaiting a court hearing.
