The man accused of the murder of Ballarat mum Samantha Murphy, Patrick Orren Stephenson, made a shocking appearance in court on Thursday, pleading guilty to a series of driving offenses. Sporting a long, wooly beard in the style common among devout Muslim men, Stephenson appeared via videolink at Ballarat Magistrates Court, dressed in a fancy R.M Williams top. This appearance marked a stark contrast to his clean-shaven look when he was initially charged, just five weeks after Ms. Murphy’s alleged murder.
Stephenson’s Troubled Past and Legal Troubles
The court heard that Stephenson, an apprentice electrician, was found lying on the road in October 2023, following a motorcycle crash after an AFL Grand Final party. The crash left him with serious injuries, including a fractured vertebra, lacerated spleen, broken pelvis and ribs, and minor head trauma. Despite these injuries, Stephenson is accused of going on to murder Ms. Murphy just three months later.
Stephenson’s lawyer, Moya O’Brien, informed the court that her client had little memory of the crash due to the injuries sustained. With a blood alcohol reading of 0.148, almost three times the legal limit, and traces of MDMA in his system, Stephenson was convicted and fined $2500 for drink, drug, and careless driving offenses. Prosecutors recommended a fine, considering Stephenson’s previous driving offense and the support he retains from his parents and long-time girlfriend.

In sentencing, Magistrate Guillaume Bailin remarked that Stephenson would have faced jail time had he not pleaded guilty. Stephenson is set to face trial in Ballarat this year for the murder of Ms. Murphy.
