In June 2005, a tragic incident occurred in Riverside where 38-year-old Alfonso Vera lost his life while trying to protect a woman from being assaulted by a man. The suspect, 32-year-old Luis Contreras, allegedly shot Vera multiple times before fleeing the scene, leaving Vera to die. Despite the efforts of investigators, Contreras managed to evade capture and fled to Mexico. A warrant was issued for his arrest in July 2005, but he remained at large for 19 years.

Recently, in June 2024, the Riverside Police Department’s Homicide Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation into Vera’s murder. Working in collaboration with the METRO Team and the US Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force, authorities were able to locate Contreras in Mexico with the assistance of Mexican law enforcement. Contreras was apprehended and transferred to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department jail, where he now faces charges of murder and awaits trial.

During the course of the investigation, two other suspects connected to the case were arrested. One suspect was charged as an accessory to the murder and served a three-year sentence, while another was released due to insufficient evidence. The authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward and contact the Homicide Cold Case Unit at (951) 320-8000 or email detectives at HomicideColdCase@RiversideCA.gov.
