A year after the tragic death of retired police chief Andreas Probst, his family is still mourning his loss while navigating the criminal trial involving the two teenagers accused of intentionally running him down.

Probst, a beloved figure who dedicated 35 years to law enforcement, was fatally struck by a car during a morning bike ride on August 14, 2023. The incident was deemed an intentional hit-and-run, leading to the arrest of Jesus Ayala, 18, and Jzamir Keys, 17, who now face charges of murder among other offenses.

His wife, Crystal Probst, continues to struggle with the absence of her husband, especially at bedtime where they always shared a kiss and an “I love you.” She finds solace in memories of his favorite sayings and tries to maintain emotional and physical strength through meditation and exercise.

The family still feels his presence in small moments, like catching a whiff of his cologne or missing his daily ritual of enjoying coffee. His absence is deeply felt, especially when they instinctively turn to share news with him, only to be met with emptiness.

Throughout the past year, Andreas Probst has been honored and remembered in various ways. His memorial service was attended by over 160 people who shared touching stories about him. His colleagues at IAC dedicated a security center in his name, and Ghost Bikes of Las Vegas placed a white-painted bike as a memorial at the site of his death.

Despite the ongoing court proceedings, the family remains hopeful for justice to be served. Crystal Probst attends every court hearing to ensure that the victims of this crime are not forgotten and to seek closure for her family.

As the trial date approaches, the family continues to cherish memories of Andreas Probst and the impact he had on their lives. His absence is deeply felt in both joyful moments and challenging times, highlighting the lasting impact he had on those around him.
