Johnson, originally from Houston, Texas, had been living in Krabi, Thailand, where he worked as a self-employed home school teacher.
The 43-year-old Johnson had served in the Marine Corps for four years as a specialist in supply and logistics support before working as a telecommunications tower technician in the US and later as an English teacher in Bangkok. Witnesses reported that Johnson and Mr. Ross had a disagreement at a restaurant near Ao Nang Beach, even though they were not acquainted with each other.
The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation as Mr. Ross was heading back to his hotel. Johnson allegedly drew a folding knife and inflicted several stab wounds on Mr. Ross, leading to his tragic death.
