Spanish authorities, in collaboration with international forces, have successfully dismantled a significant cocaine smuggling network that was responsible for transporting large quantities of cocaine from Latin American countries into Europe via boats. This operation involved the arrest of 50 individuals across eight different countries and the seizure of 1.5 tons of cocaine, along with eight vessels used for transportation.
The mastermind behind this network, known as “The Professor,” was apprehended in Norway. He was a seasoned drug smuggler with over 20 years of experience and had established strong connections with Colombian and Mexican drug cartels. The network also included members of the “Balkans’ cartel” who were found living lavishly in Spain’s Costa del Sol region.
Interestingly, the criminal organization sought the blessing of a Santero, a type of witch doctor, to ensure the success of their cocaine transportation operations. This spiritual element added a unique dimension to their illegal activities and highlighted the intricate web of connections involved in drug trafficking.
A total of 26 individuals were arrested in Spain, including 16 Norwegians, one of whom was a former bank robber with a history of violence. Additionally, 24 suspected gang members were detained in other countries such as Bulgaria, Colombia, Norway, Panama, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and the UK.
Spain, being a major entry point for cocaine into Europe, has been actively combating drug smuggling operations. Recent raids have led to significant drug seizures and numerous arrests, showcasing the ongoing efforts to disrupt these criminal activities. The collaboration between various law enforcement agencies and Europol has been instrumental in achieving these successful operations.
This latest bust is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking, with other countries also reporting significant cocaine seizures in recent days. Authorities in Paraguay and Ecuador made substantial drug busts, underscoring the global nature of the illicit drug trade and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing its impact. The coordinated efforts to target drug cartels and smuggling networks demonstrate a commitment to combating narco-terrorism and securing communities from the harmful effects of drug trafficking.
