A member of the Gorilla Stone Mafia gang, known as “Tragedy,” has been found guilty of murdering two rivals in Staten Island. John Pena, 32, admitted to the killings in 2021 through rap lyrics he wrote while in jail. He referred to himself as “the reaper” and described leaving his victims’ brains on the sheets.
Pena was convicted of the murders of Mark Bajandas and Francisco Gonzalez, who were targeted as part of a feud between different gangs. The Gorilla Stone Mafia, a subset of the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation and Bloods, was led by Pena, who was determined to maintain his leadership position at any cost.
The crimes committed by Pena, including shooting a man in his sleep and firing a dozen bullets at another victim, were described as ruthless and shocking by US Attorney Breon Peace. The jury found Pena guilty of racketeering, murder, and various gun and drug offenses, resulting in a mandatory life sentence in prison.
In addition to the murders, Pena was involved in drug trafficking, selling substances like weed, crack, and heroin. His actions instilled fear in the Staten Island community, especially among residents of the Stapleton Houses where the gang operated.
Law enforcement officials discovered Pena’s incriminating rap lyrics while he was awaiting trial, where he boasted about turning his enemies into ghosts and taking their souls. The violent nature of gang activity, including the use of illegal firearms, poses a significant threat to public safety, according to Interim NYPD Commissioner Tom Donlon.
The conviction of Pena sends a strong message about the consequences of engaging in criminal behavior and the importance of dismantling gangs that perpetuate violence in communities. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat organized crime and protect the well-being of New Yorkers.
