Florida Woman Sentenced for Zipping Boyfriend into Suitcase
A Florida woman, Sarah Boone, was sentenced Monday to life in prison by Circuit Judge Michael Kraynick in Orlando for zipping her boyfriend, Jorge Torres, into a suitcase and leaving him to die of suffocation. The incident occurred in their Winter Park, Florida residence in 2020 amid a history of domestic and alcohol abuse. Boone was convicted of second-degree murder following a 10-day trial where she rejected a plea deal offer of a 15-year sentence.
Family members of Jorge Torres expressed their pain and grief during the sentencing hearing. Victoria Torres, his sister, said, “Sarah deserves to rot in jail. Sarah has caused a lifetime of pain.” Boone, on the other hand, defended herself by recounting years of abuse by Torres and asked for forgiveness for her actions, saying, “I forgive myself for falling in love with a monster. I tried breaking the spell … I never stopped loving him.”
Boone initially told investigators that she and Torres had been drinking heavily before he climbed into the suitcase during a game of hide-and-seek. She went to sleep, assuming Torres could free himself. The next morning, she found him unresponsive in the suitcase. Prosecutors argued that Boone kept Torres in the suitcase despite his pleas for help, leading to his death.
Boone rejected the manslaughter plea deal, claiming self-defense due to past violent incidents with Torres. Cellphone videos presented in court captured Torres’ cries for help and Boone’s references to past conflicts between them.

What drives someone to commit such a heinous act? How can society better support victims and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future? Let us remember Jorge Torres as more than just a victim but as a person whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence. Let us strive to create a world where such tragedies are unthinkable.
