Marcee Gray, the mother of the Georgia teen accused of a school shooting, has been indicted for allegedly abusing her elderly mother. The grand jury charged her with exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and theft.
The incident occurred when Marcee Gray taped her 73-year-old mother, Deborah Polhamus, to a chair and left her alone for nearly 24 hours. The police report stated that Gray bound her mother, took her phone, and damaged property in November 2023. Polhamus was found by a family friend the next day, injured and restrained.
Marcee Gray claimed that she was experiencing a drug-induced psychosis at the time and wanted her mother to accompany her to her estranged husband’s home. When her mother refused, she restrained her to prevent her from calling the police. Gray expressed deep remorse for her actions and acknowledged the horror of what she put her mother through.
Following the school shooting in which her son was involved, Marcee Gray wrote an open letter to the victims’ families, apologizing for her son’s alleged actions. She described the situation as a nightmare and expressed her personal responsibility for the tragic events.
Despite claiming to have warned the school about her son’s behavior before the shooting, authorities and school officials did not confirm her statements. In the days following her mother’s ordeal, Marcee Gray was arrested for drug possession and damaging her ex-husband’s car. She was sentenced to probation after a brief jail term.
The recent grand jury indictment against Marcee Gray includes the serious charge of felony elder exploitation, which could lead to a 20-year prison sentence. The case has raised concerns about substance abuse and mental health issues, prompting resources like the SAMHSA National Helpline for those in need of assistance.
