A former school teacher and rugby coach, Richard Lees, has been sentenced to two years in prison for a disturbing series of crimes involving upskirting, voyeurism, and possession of indecent images of children. The case, which unfolded in Macclesfield, Cheshire, has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.

The Disturbing Discovery
Lees, 43, initially came under police scrutiny in July 2022 for an unrelated offense, prompting officers to seize electronic devices from him, including a school-issued laptop. However, it wasn’t until the authorities delved deeper into the contents of these devices that the full extent of Lees’ depravity was revealed.

Upon examination, investigators unearthed a trove of ‘category A’ child abuse images and extreme pornography on Lees’ laptop and encrypted hard drive. The discovery painted a grim picture of a man entrusted with the care and education of young minds, using his position to perpetrate heinous acts.

The Legal Reckoning
Despite initial denials, Lees eventually pleaded guilty to five charges, including voyeurism, possession of indecent images of children, and possession of extreme pornography. The gravity of his offenses was not lost on the court, as Lees received a two-year sentence for his crimes.

Detective Constable Alison Shields of Cheshire Police expressed admiration for the victims who came forward, highlighting their bravery in facing the trauma inflicted by Lees. She emphasized the breach of trust inherent in Lees’ actions, noting that he had betrayed the very children who looked up to him for guidance and support.

“I hope this will also encourage anyone who may have been a victim of any similar offenses to come forward and report it to us,” said Detective Constable Shields, underlining the importance of seeking justice and closure for all affected by such crimes.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who exploit positions of authority for personal gratification, and the imperative of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable members of society. The scars left by Lees’ actions will undoubtedly linger, but the resilience of those impacted stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who refuse to be silenced in the face of injustice.
