John Carter, the fiancé of an Ohio art student, Katelyn Markham, who went missing nearly 13 years ago, was sentenced to three years in prison for her death. Carter, 36, had been charged with two counts of murder when he was arrested in March 2023, but he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter as part of a plea deal. Katelyn Markham disappeared in August 2011 from her home in Fairfield, Ohio, just before completing her graphic arts degree at the Art Institute of Ohio—Cincinnati. Carter and Markham had plans to move to Colorado later that year.
The skeletal remains of Markham were found in 2013 in a wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana, approximately 20 miles from her home. Although authorities ruled her death a homicide, they were unable to determine the exact cause of death. Butler County prosecutors stated that Carter was responsible for Markham’s death due to physical violence and force but did not provide an explanation for the motive.
During the sentencing hearing, Katelyn Markham’s father, Dave Markham, read a heartfelt letter to the court, expressing the pain and loss experienced by the family since Katelyn’s disappearance. He urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence on Carter, emphasizing the lasting impact of Katelyn’s absence on their lives. Carter chose not to speak during the hearing, while his attorneys requested leniency from the judge, citing the plea deal terms.
Despite the defense’s arguments, Judge Daniel Haughey decided to impose the maximum sentence allowed under the plea deal, stating that Carter had not shown genuine remorse for his actions. Haughey noted Carter’s lack of cooperation in revealing details about Markham’s death and his failure to take responsibility for his role in the crime. Dave Markham, in a previous interview, expressed his frustration over the years of uncertainty and the toll it took on their family, emphasizing the need for justice to be served.
