A Thai woman named Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, believed to be one of the worst serial killers in Thailand’s history, has been sentenced to death for poisoning her friend with cyanide, which was the first of her 14 murder trials.
Sararat, who is 36 years old and addicted to online gambling, is accused of swindling money from her victims before killing them with the chemical. The court in Bangkok convicted her for fatally poisoning her friend Siriporn Kanwong, who collapsed and died after they met up near Bangkok last year to release fish into the Mae Klong river as part of a Buddhist ritual.
Traces of cyanide were found in Siriporn’s body, and police collected evidence from Sararat’s vehicle. Investigators were able to link her to unsolved cyanide poisonings dating back to 2015. Sararat funded her gambling addiction by borrowing money from her victims, killing them, and stealing their belongings.
Sararat faces 13 more murder trials and has been charged with around 80 offenses in total. Her ex-husband, Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn, and her former lawyer were also implicated in the case. Vitoon was given a prison sentence for complicity in Siriporn’s killing, as they were still living together despite being divorced. Police suspect Vitoon’s involvement in another murder linked to Sararat.
Thailand has seen various high-profile criminal cases, including the recent deaths of six foreigners in a luxury Bangkok hotel due to cyanide poisoning related to debts worth millions of baht.
The court’s decision to sentence Sararat to death was met with approval from Siriporn’s mother, who expressed relief that justice had been served for her daughter. The trial shed light on the dark world of serial killings and the impact of addiction on individuals and their families.
This case highlights the need for increased awareness of the dangers of online gambling and the importance of seeking help for addiction issues. It also underscores the importance of thorough investigations and forensic work in solving complex criminal cases. The victims’ families have finally received some closure, but the emotional scars left by Sararat’s actions will last a lifetime.
