A Florida man named Giovanny Aldama Garcia, 23, from Ruskin, has been arrested for tying his dog, Jumbo, to a fence as Hurricane Milton approached the state. This act of cruelty led to his charge of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony offense that could result in up to five years in prison. State Attorney Suzy Lopez expressed her belief that the potential sentence may not be enough and called for lawmakers to consider stricter penalties for those who abandon their animals during emergencies.
The dog, now known as Trooper, was rescued from chest-deep water in Tampa during evacuation efforts and has since been placed in the care of a foster family. Aldama Garcia was released on a $2,500 bond but did not have a listed attorney. He admitted to leaving the bull terrier on the side of Interstate 75 because he was unable to find someone to take care of the dog while he fled to Georgia to escape the storm.
State Trooper Orlando Morales received a tip from a passing driver and located the dog tied to a fence, surrounded by stormwater. Despite Aldama Garcia’s attempt to reclaim ownership of the dog from an animal shelter, he ultimately surrendered ownership under the condition that a foster family would care for Trooper with love and attention.
Governor Ron DeSantis condemned the man’s actions, emphasizing that it is unacceptable to leave a dog tied up during a storm. Trooper, now residing with a foster family in Tallahassee, is said to be receiving excellent care. The Leon County Humane Society confirmed that the foster family has experience with the breed and will ensure that Trooper is well taken care of.
In situations like these, it is crucial to remember that pets are members of our families and deserve to be treated with care and respect, especially during times of crisis. It is heartening to see the community coming together to provide Trooper with the love and attention he deserves after enduring such a traumatic experience. Let this case serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting our furry friends during emergencies.
