FBI agents recently arrested a man from Florida named Harun Abdul-Malik Yener for allegedly planning to bomb the New York Stock Exchange. The investigation into Yener began in February after the FBI received a tip about bomb-making schematics being stored in an unlocked storage unit in Coral Springs, Florida. During the search of the unit, agents found watches with timers, electronic circuit boards, and other electronics.
Yener expressed his desire to join a militia and later met with undercover FBI agents to discuss his plan. He requested photos of the New York Stock Exchange and explosive materials to help him target the right locations for the attack. In a conversation with an undercover operative, Yener mentioned his intention to travel to New York to set up the bomb, wearing a disguise and distributing a recorded message to the press outlining the reasons behind the attack.
The affidavit revealed that Yener conducted online searches and shared videos on how to construct explosives and triggers associated with traps and explosives. He believed that bombing the NYSE would lead to a “reboot” or “reset” of the United States government. Despite considering joining ISIS in 2015, Yener decided against it, believing that ISIS would not succeed in achieving its objectives.
Yener made audio recordings of his demands and reasons for the attack by November 12, comparing himself to Bin Laden. This arrest is one of several in recent months involving individuals planning attacks on U.S. officials and landmarks. In October, a man from Afghanistan was arrested for planning a terrorist attack on Election Day, and in August, a Pakistani national with alleged ties to Iran was arrested for plotting a murder-for-hire scheme targeting U.S. government officials and politicians.
