Chicago Customs Seize Over 1,500 Glock Gun Switches in 2021
In a shocking revelation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Chicago seized more than 1,500 weapon-modifying devices designed to turn weapons fully automatic in 2021. From January to December, a total of 473 shipments containing 1,507 weapon-modifying devices were intercepted by CBP officers, marking a significant effort to prevent illegal firearms from entering the country.
The Rise of Glock Switches
Among the confiscated items, 354 Glock switches were identified within 155 shipments between January and June. The number spiked dramatically in the following months, with 241 shipments containing a staggering 948 switches seized in July, August, and September. These Glock switches, which convert semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic ones, pose a serious threat to public safety and are strictly prohibited by law.
CBP’s Vigilant Efforts
LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, the director of field operations for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Chicago Field Office, commended the officers for their diligence in identifying and intercepting these dangerous devices. By closely scrutinizing import manifests and tracking shipping trends, CBP officers successfully prevented these Glock switches from falling into the wrong hands.
Legal Ramifications and Ongoing Investigations
While the importation and use of automatic fire conversion switches for handguns are prohibited by law, the availability of these devices online poses a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has strict regulations in place to restrict the importation of such items.
In a related development, multiple states have taken legal action against Georgia-based Glock Inc. for allegedly disregarding the risks associated with the ease with which switches can convert handguns into fully automatic weapons. This lawsuit sheds light on the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement measures to combat the proliferation of illegal firearm modifications.
As we reflect on these alarming findings, it is crucial for authorities and the public to remain vigilant in addressing the ongoing threat posed by illegal firearms and weapon modifications. Only through collaborative efforts and stringent enforcement can we ensure the safety and security of our communities.
