Man Arrested for Setting Fire at Wisconsin Congressman’s Office Over TikTok Ban
A 19-year-old man was arrested for setting fire to a strip mall in Wisconsin where Congressman Glenn Grothman’s office is located. The suspect told authorities that he was motivated by the federal ban on TikTok, a popular video-sharing platform with over 170 million American users.
The fire, which started outside the building early Sunday morning, caused minor damage before it was extinguished. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the office was unoccupied at the time. Police officers used fire extinguishers to help contain the blaze until fire crews arrived on the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, a Menasha resident whose name has not been released, will be charged with arson. He was apprehended near the mall while watching the fire unfold. Police Chief Aaron Goldstein commended the swift response of officers in handling the situation and ensuring the safety of the community.
Congressman Grothman, whose office was targeted in the incident, refrained from commenting immediately. The congressman had previously supported a bill requiring TikTok’s parent company to sell its U.S. operations to avoid a ban in the country, a move that may have influenced the suspect’s actions.
Clock is Ticking for TikTok and Its American Users
On the same day as the arson, TikTok temporarily shut down its U.S. operations in anticipation of an impending ban. However, the platform resumed service after President-elect Donald Trump indicated his intention to issue an executive order to allow TikTok to continue operating in the country.
The incident highlights the intense emotions surrounding the TikTok ban and the impact it has on individuals and communities. As the investigation unfolds, authorities will continue to assess the situation and ensure the safety and security of all involved.
As we reflect on this alarming event, it raises questions about the power of social media and its influence on individuals’ actions. How can we navigate the complexities of online platforms responsibly, ensuring that disagreements do not escalate into dangerous acts of violence? Let’s strive to engage in constructive dialogue and foster understanding in our increasingly digital world.
