Rising Hate Crimes Against LGBTQ Community Linked to Far-Right Politicians
The LGBTQ community is facing a troubling trend of increasing hate crimes, according to recent data released by the FBI. While overall violent crime rates in the United States have seen a decrease, hate crimes, particularly those targeting the LGBTQ community, have been on the rise in 2023. The FBI’s findings, based on submissions from local law enforcement agencies, revealed a 3% decrease in overall crime rates from 2022 to 2023. According to analysis by ABC News, there were at least 2,389 recorded incidents in 2023 where bias against a victim’s sexual orientation, excluding heterosexuality, was a motivating factor. This represents a significant increase from the approximately 2,188 incidents reported in 2022 and 1,300 incidents in 2021. The data also showed a rise in gender identity-based incidents, with the number of recorded offenses increasing from 307 in 2021 to 515 in 2022 and 547 in 2023.
