A man named Habeeb Khan, aged 49, from Sparkbrook in Birmingham, appeared in court recently for allegedly using a fake AK-47 to threaten Tommy Robinson and the English Defence League in a social media video. The charges against him include possessing an imitation firearm with the intent to cause fear of violence, sending threats of death or serious harm, and verbally abusing a police officer. According to West Midlands Police, these charges stem from a video that circulated on social media on a Monday night. The video was posted on the same night that a group of Muslim men gathered in Bordesley Green to confront a rumored far-right rally that never happened.
In the video, a masked man is seen holding what appears to be an AK-47, threatening Tommy Robinson by saying, “Hey, Tommy Robinson, you want to play rough, hey? OK, come on! You want to play rough? I’ll blow you away!” The man then loads an ammunition clip into the rifle before turning to the camera and threatening members of the English Defence League, saying, “EDL, we are going to come and f****** blow you away.”
During a hearing at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, Khan was charged with possessing an imitation firearm, specifically an AK-47, with the intent to make the EDL believe that violence would be used against them. He was also charged with sending a message that conveyed a threat of serious harm, as well as using abusive language towards a police officer. Khan pleaded not guilty to the possession of an imitation firearm charge, and the other two offenses were sent to Birmingham Crown Court.
District Judge David Wain remanded Khan in custody until his next court appearance on August 14. The case has attracted significant attention due to the nature of the threats made in the video and the potential implications for public safety and freedom of expression. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between different groups in society and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order and preventing violence.
It is essential for individuals to express their views and opinions peacefully and respectfully, without resorting to threats or intimidation. The legal system plays a crucial role in addressing such behavior and holding individuals accountable for their actions. As the case progresses, it will be important to consider the broader societal implications and the need to foster understanding and dialogue among diverse communities. By upholding the rule of law and promoting mutual respect, we can work towards a more inclusive and harmonious society for all.
