A Florida sheriff’s deputy and his wife were arrested and accused of abusing their children. Deputy Christopher George Turney, 40, and Leandra Childers Turney, 39, were charged with child neglect and failing to require school attendance. The deputy was fired after the arrest.
The incident came to light when Turney’s son went to a church and reported physical abuse by his father. He had bruises around his eye and showed photographs of his injuries to authorities. The child, whose age was not disclosed, also mentioned being belittled by his father and not receiving a formal education since being adopted in 2017.
Another child in the family, born in 2019, claimed to receive minimal homeschooling and lacked basic necessities like a toothbrush. Her teeth were reportedly decayed, and she had not seen a doctor regularly. Despite having medical and dental insurance, the children seemed to have been neglected in terms of healthcare.
Christopher Turney denied the allegations and stated that his wife was responsible for homeschooling. He mentioned assisting with education when his wife was away. The children’s grandmother, a dental hygienist, offered help with dental care but was not taken up on the offer. She provided basic dental care items to the family, but the children’s dental health remained poor.
The Turneys were released on bond and are set to be arraigned in August. The children were placed in a local child advocacy group, and their current living situation is unknown. According to national data, millions of children in the U.S. are referred for maltreatment each year, with a significant number of perpetrators being parents.
