Two boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested Saturday for attacking former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Friday while the two victims were out for a walk. Paterson, who is 70 years old and legally blind, and his stepson were treated at a hospital for minor injuries to the face. Paterson also sustained injuries to his body during the assault.
The boys, who have not been identified due to their age, have been charged with gang assault. Police are seeking information from the public to learn more about the attack, as they believe at least five individuals were involved.
Former Governor Paterson, a Democrat who served from 2008 to 2010, explained that the incident began when his stepson encountered some of the assailants while walking the family dog. After warning them to stop climbing a fire escape, Paterson and Sliwa later encountered the group again during their walk and got into an argument before being attacked.
Paterson’s son managed to fend off multiple attackers, but Paterson ended up with a cut on his face that required stitches. The former governor expressed gratitude for his son’s bravery in defending them during the assault.
The attack on Paterson and his stepson is a concerning incident that highlights the need for increased awareness of safety in public spaces. It serves as a reminder that everyone, regardless of their background or status, can be vulnerable to acts of violence.
As we reflect on this unfortunate event, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of ourselves and our loved ones. By staying vigilant and taking precautions while out in public, we can help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
