District Attorney Indicted for Firing Gunshot During Fugitive Pursuit
Charges have been filed against Christopher Robert Stanford, the district attorney for Van Buren and Warren counties in Tennessee, for recklessly shooting into a home while pursuing a fugitive. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the indictment of Stanford on one count of reckless endangerment, following an incident where he fired his gun while a mother and her three children were inside the residence.
The incident took place on Nov. 21, when Warren County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a deceased man in a home in McMinnville. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered two more bodies and identified the deceased as the homeowners. Following this grim discovery, authorities reached out to the district attorney’s office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and agents from the Department of Homeland Security for assistance.
Pursuit of Suspects
During the subsequent investigation, law enforcement authorities tried to apprehend the suspects, Jessica Root and Caleb Brookins, in connection with the killings. Stanford, who was present at the scene, attempted to pursue Brookins, who was trying to escape in a vehicle driven by Hannah Rose. In the pursuit, Stanford fired his gun at the suspects’ car, with a bullet penetrating the wall of the nearby home where the mother and her children were located.
Legal Ramifications
An indictment cited by The Tennessean alleges that Stanford knowingly and recklessly discharged his weapon during the pursuit without facing any immediate danger. While Stanford initially claimed self-defense, a video obtained by WTVF showed him firing multiple shots toward the suspects’ car as it sped away. As a result, Root, Rose, and Brookins were taken into custody on suspicion of criminal homicide.
Court Appearance
Stanford is expected to appear in DeKalb County General Sessions Court on Jan. 7 in relation to the charges. He was released on a $10,000 bond, and it remains unclear if he has legal representation. The shooting incident has resulted in Stanford being recused from prosecuting the homicide case, as he is now considered a witness in the ongoing investigation.
